It's about time we started a place within jkOnTheRun where readers can see at a glance what gear I am currently using. I get asked this question a lot and a reader suggested that Kevin and I start a place where we can keep current tabs on what we're using and why. This is my "gear bag" and Kevin will have one up shortly too. I will keep this updated whenever a piece of the kit changes, something that happens pretty regularly.
NOTE: all gear was purchased by me except where noted appropriately.
JK's daily mobile gear (last updated 3Dec08)
iPhone 3G- Like a million other folks I picked up the new iPhone and am very happy with it. My phone usage is more data/ web than phone related and the iPhone 3G is the best for that by far.
Apple MacBook- the 13-inch aluminum MacBook is the latest addition to my mobile gear and it is fast becoming my main mobile workstation. It has replaced several laptops and also knocked the 17-inch MacBook Pro off my main work desk.
HTC Advantage- the most capable and fastest Windows Mobile PDA I have ever used. The Advantage has gobs of memory, a mini-SD slot and an integrated 8 GB MicroDrive so there is storage a plenty. Windows Mobile 6 has been included to round out the Advantage and it is a rock-solid device that can function as a stand-alone blogging platform when I want to travel very light. The HSDPA connectivity is so fast I don't even turn the WiFi on. Great, versatile device. NOTE: the Advantage has been provided by HTC for evaluation purposes.
Verizon USB727 EV-DO modem- Verizon's EV-DO Rev A coverage is so extensive I never find myself out of the range of broadband. I can set up my virtual cubicle almost anywhere and it's due in large part to the USB727.
RIM BlackBerry 8830- the 8830 is a messaging machine in addition to being a thin and light phone. What can I say, it's a BlackBerry.
T-Mobile G1- the G1 is the first Android phone to appear and its tight integration with Google applications makes it a real workhorse.
TomTom One Navigator- the One is a simple to use reliable GPS system that comes with me every day. It has guided me faithfully to new destinations and helped route me around traffic problems more times than I can count. On days when I forget to bring TomTom with me I feel lost without it.
My stay at home gear
Nokia N800- the N800 is fun to use for web work when WiFi is available. Paring this with the Stowaway Bluetooth keyboard turns it into a killer mobile desktop. Note: the N800 is an evaluation unit supplied by Nokia.
MacBook Pro- what can I say, the 17-inch MacBook Pro is my desktop replacement that is the cornerstone of my home office. I use it extensively for audio and video processing and editing, something that it excels at marvelously. It just works.
Finally died. Canon i70 portable printer- the i70 is going on 5 years old now and still is a great printer. I no longer carry it with me, something I did for over a year, even though it's certainly small and light enough. The battery pack will print something like 100 pages on a charge should power ever fail. The i70 is such a good printer that it is hanging off my Airport Extreme router and serves as a network printer for all six PCs on the network.
Canon LIDE500F scanner- the 500F is a flatbed scanner that can stand up and take very little desk space. It is a very capable scanner and one of the most-used pieces of equipment in my paperless office.
Casio EX-P505 camera- the Casio is one of the smallest cameras around with a 10x optical zoom. Takes great photos and lasts seemingly forever on a single charge of the AA batteries.
