Freeware of the Moment- RoboForm

Today's Freeware of the Moment is a utility that is always running on my Tablet PC. RoboForm fills in web forms and passwords with the click of the pen (or mouse) and learns as it goes so you can easily log into secure sites without invoking the Tablet PC TIP. It works on non-Tablets too so it's a good fit for everyone. There is a commercial Pro version that offers "unlimited passcards" but I've been using the free "limited" version for a good while with no problems. RoboForm is so indispensable that when I reach the free limit I will gladly pony up the $30 for it. It has a cool icon, too.

CoPilot live 6 GPS for the Treo 700w

On the MobileTechRoundup Podcast that will be released shortly I mentioned my search for a GPS solution for the Palm Treo 700w. Dave Ciccone pointed out that ALK Technologies has just announced the availability of the CoPilot live 6 solution for the Treo 700w. The CoPilot live 6 package is available as software only or with a Bluetooth receiver included. Check out these features:

• Enhanced 3D map display with Mileage Markers, Moving Maps, and turn arrows that highlight the way ahead
• Finger touch menus and options screens mean you never have to use your stylus
• Supports Portrait, Landscape, Square and VGA displays

The system starts at $199 for the software and maps only and ramps up to $399 for the Bluetooth GPS receiver and a 1 GB SD card for the Treo with all maps for North America pre-loaded.

Paperless Challenge Podcast Part 2 is available

Eric Mack has released the second podcast in a series covering his paperless challenge on his Tecra M4 Tablet PC. Tracy Hooten of The Student Tablet PC blog joins Eric again to discuss the best practices and challenges they faced trying to go completely paperless. I am really enjoying these podcasts having been paperless for some months now with my Tablet PC and it is fun hearing Eric and Tracy discussing the same issues I faced when I made the conversion.

The duo answer an interesting question from a listener who wonders how they are saving time when they invest a lot of time scanning in large text works, such as text books. They answer the question quite nicely so if you have been curious about that listen carefully to what they say. I would add to their answer an observation from my own experience. Sometimes the important point is locating information you need quickly with little warning, such as in a business meeting. Having invested some time when you have it free to scan in that information goes a long way when you need to access it quickly. Give this second part in the series a listen and if you missed the first part (shame on you) then make sure you listen to it first.

Microsoft has cranked the customer empathy up a couple of notches with the We Share Your Pain (WeSYP) program. Take a look at this short video (spoof) and you'll see what I mean.

When you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go

A man was arrested in Virginia for stealing $22,000 of toilet paper. He was tracked down by the GPS fleet tracking system installed in the truck.

"The trailer had a GPS tracker on it and when the trailer began moving it started and tracked it to the 2100 block of Washington Street, to the Fair Trade Supermarket," said Sgt. Tommy Young, spokesman for Petersburg police. "Whoever stole it took it back and parked it in a different parking space and that's how they found out."

The owner of the Fair Trade Supermarket allowed Petersburg police to look around the store Thursday and found no trace of the stolen toilet tissue inside. Officers spotted a truck, about half the size of a tractor-trailer, parked outside the store.

"We talked to the owner of the car dealership next door who said the truck belong to the store owner," said Young. "We got a search warrant for the vehicle, popped the lock and found the stolen goods inside."

TinyScreenfuls podcast about the ThinkPad X41 Tablet PC

I know, I am woefully behind on listening to podcasts and I just listened to Josh Bancroft's show recorded earlier this year about his ThinkPad X41 Tablet PC that he recently received. His friend Brian drops by his cube at work and the recorded session is a good example of the delight people experience when they sit down and start writing on the screen. The two of them talk about a lot of other stuff too so check it out.

Dr. Neil strikes again

Uber Tablet is a new blog by Hugo Ortega that promises to chronicle his adventures with the Tablet PC. Hugo is in Sydney Australia and was introduced to the Tablet PC by fellow Aussie and Tablet PC MVP Dr. Neil Roodyn. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Neil last year in Redmond and his is a very interesting guy so it's easy to see how he got to Hugo. I am looking forward to following Hugo's experiences with his Tablet PC and if we're lucky maybe Dr. Neil will make an appearance.

Get ready for Mobile TV

Mobile TV services have been gathering steam and mobile viewers can get ready for a rash of new TV services from major US phone carriers. While the exisiting services like MobiTV and Verizon's VCast have already launched the consumer has been restricted to just a few handsets capable of using the video services but that is about to change with major OEMs like Nokia getting new phones ready to be used on the high-speed connections like EVDO. CNet has an excellent overview of the mobile TV landscape for those who can't wait to watch TV on their mobile phones.
