jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #28- Fujitsu P1610 Video Review

Watch jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #28 here (WMV format, 320 x 240, 192MB, 52 minutes)
For the bandwidth-conscious, we have a low-res version right here (WMV format, 320 x 240, 94 MB).
Hold your horses! Before you get all excited because you missed show #27 just hold on and listen a minute. It seems that running off the production crew in show #25 was a very bad move on my part and although this would be show #27 it's labeled all over as show #28. It really is show #27 so you haven't missed a thing, just pretend the last show was #27 and everything will be all right.
This show is a video overview of the new Fujitsu P1610 Tablet PC and I think once you've seen this baby in action you'll see why I like it so much. It's a mini-Tablet PC with an 8.9" touchscreen displaying 1280 x 768 and in the video you'll see why it provides a complete Tablet PC experience without an active digitizer. You'll also see the first look at the port replicator and extended battery that provides 6 hours of ink time.
Enjoy the show and leave us some feedback about the Fujitsu.
Special thanks to Allegiance Technology Partners for supplying me with the review unit used in this video. Visit their web site and see all the Tablety goodness they offer!

NEW! This video is now available in MP4 format which means it can be downloaded in iTunes! Hopefully we'll be able to release all videos going forward in MP4 so those of you using iTunes as your podcatcher of choice will be able to get them just like all your other podcasts. Hi jk
I downloaded and watched this review of the P1610 and I must say I'm rather disappointed.
You do not need a "production crew" to make a fun and enjoyable video, you just had to use some software (even Windows Movie Maker) and cut off the dull bits. I stopped watching when you couldn't zoom and focus into the Fujistu's screen to show your writing.
I'm willing to give your show another shot with the next issue, but you need to seriously consider expending a few minutes getting acquainted with the most basic video-making skills.

I got my P1610 yesterday - thanks for the video, it helped make my decision easier.
I'm loving the pc. The only things I'm not likely are:
1 - it came loaded with Win XP Pro, NOT win XP Tablet Edition. Anyone else get this?
2 - inking is terrible. It seems like it's trying to correct my writing which is making the writing really ugly.
Any help appreciated.

Wow amazing device. Thanks for the video review.
I would have liked to see this review at about 1/3 the length. Some editing would have been nice b/c parts of the video were, uh, a bit slow. When he started writing on the tablet and pointing the camera himself (which took about 1 minute) I am sure most people shut if off. We know video is hard to do, but come one... work with us here ; )

I actually have a macbook and have been debating picking up either a tablet pc or umpc for school. While these devices are great the boot time on the Fujitsu P1610 Tablet PC was totally discouraging. While I rarely shut down my laptop it's nice to know that I can get it back up and running quickly. Hopefully vista will speed up the boot time and if it doesn't I will be waiting on the mac tablet.

I am trying to make a decision between the Fujitsu P1610 and the Motion LE1600 and 800. Myb problem is that there is no way to try both out. You have, can you comment on the differences please

Hi JK,
In the video you had trouble taking out the battery at first, this was because the tablet was closed and the small plastic lock at the top middle of the screen was into the battery hole, that's why after you opened the P1610 the battery came right out. In general there's no problem to get the battery out.

Thanks for the great review! I’m new to your blog and I got the Fuji P1610 based on your review. Keep the great content coming!
I have one question though, I’m not sure if it this is normal among tablet pc and UMPCs but when I’m inking on my desktop (or anywhere in MS Journal or OneNote), sometimes I get squiggly lines like this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v133/Dmc1iq/squigglyinking.jpg?t=1168905410). The first 3 lines were written earlier, before, my Fuji was acting up. The last three lines look horrible (especially my “n” and “g”). It looked like I had an epileptic seizure while inking. Do you, intermittently, get the squiggly lines on your Miyagi? Is this normal in tablet pcs?
Thanks for your reply,
Mike

It's probably your fingernails causing the lines. If I am heavy into one note and my fingernails press the "right" way I sometimes get the lines too. I've found that the lenscloth I use on my sunglasses used under my hand as I write prevents this. And it cleans as I write...

Hi, I just bought a P1610 and its awesome. However, mine makes a high pitch whining noise - very irritating. Not sure what it is but its loudest underneath the unit. It almost sounds like the noise you hear from a monitor when the refresh rate is too not correct. Did you experience anything like that?

Hopw does this device differ from an ultra-mobile? It looks only a bit bigger than a Samsung Q1, but doesn't have the frustratingly low-resolution screen of the Q1. I'm puzzled about why anyone would get a UMPC when they can get something like this Fujitsu.

I"ve been reading and viewing this with much intrest, and am now a happy owner of a p1610. It's sooooo cute. But I'm having a crisis. I thought that I would be able to use office mobile on this machine, or some equivalent that would allow me to sync outlook, word, and powerpoint files. I actually called fujitsu about this before ordering, and they said, sure, not problem. I can't get through to anyone at microsoft who seems to know the answer to this question -- keep getting "let me connect you to..." and getting passed along. Does anyone know the answer to this question? I'd like to sync the fuji with my workhorse pc. Another solution would be to get a PDA and use it to sync with both machines, but I was hoping the p1610 would suffice instead of a pda.

Hi,
very interesting device ... does it plays video and dvd (with externel DVD-Drive) ?
Does Youtube and Co working well ?
From the Specs side it should work ... but i am surprised about the prices on ebay. THey sell it for 700€ withh warranty !
In my Opinion its the best UMPC i have seen.
Are there any disadvantages compared with other UMPCs ?
The Cpu should be a big improvment campared with them.
800 - 1200 ... thats a big price difference.
Would be very happy if someone could answer me!
:-)
Greetings from Germany and i hope someone could help me :-)
Flo
