Next generation Eee PC details slowly leaking out
As I battle my fifth full day of the Flu (which explains my MIA status since late last week), CeBIT is gearing up. There's no official press release yet out of Asus, but I expect some detailed information on the next generation of the Eee PC based on a post from French site, Blogeee.net. The English translation can be found here and so far, there's not much we didn't already glean from the Asus press event at CES 2008.
Asus still expects to offer an 8.9-inch display, which I have to believe will run at 1024 x 600 or better in terms of resolution. Blogeee.net expects one Gigabyte of memory standard and SSD capacity up to 12 GB. Since an 8.9-inch display could fit in the current Eee PC chassis, my gut tells me that the new 900 model will be no larger than the current 700 units, which is fantastic from a mobile device perspective. Expect to pay a premium for the extra screen size and storage... thoughts are around 30% over current models, but that remains to be seen from an official word yet. I still think that would be a great value for a very portable notebook.
Update: Engadget confirms most of the above details and has some hands-on pics of the new 8.9-inch Eee. Looks slightly larger than the first gen and the trackpad appears to be bigger. w00t!

Bah! Awaiting that aluminum-clad hp 2133 (which *really* needs a NAME, dammit!).

I like the idea of a larger screen, more memory, and faster processor. But, if the price of the Eee is going to continue to rise, I think my 4G Surf is the last Eee I'll be buying.
I think Asus is losing sight of why the Eee is an attractive purchase.

the HP is nice, but the Asus will have a significant size advantage
think of it like the P7000 vs P1600

Maybe they should call this next one, the fffPC...
Then we could call it the 'effin'PC for short...

In the last few months I have noticed that the disease that I have been plagued with for a while has evolved to a new level...
I used to suffer from the "early-adopter" virus, buying a great technology to obtain that feeling of pleasure it provided, only to find that 6 months later the taste of pleasure would become more bitter as something fresher would come along.
Now I have found with the rash of announcements in this ultra-mobile space, that this disease has evolved to make me become a "non-adopter".
As soon as I get to the point of pulling the trigger on purchasing a device, a new bit of information comes out to make me hold off for a bit longer.
We appear to be witnessing a real revolution in the UMPC space... makes me wonder how the Sony UX and OQO Models can expect to survive. (Go on, follow FlipStart's lead!)
I did however get an Advantage, (3 months before the upgrade announcement...Grrrr), which is serving me well.
Looks like I will be Windows Mobile reliant for a while longer!

hmm.. should be interesting to see if its as big of a hit as the inital 2G/4G/8G versions..
honestly i don't see them doing as well since the main selling points of the first gen ones are the price points for such a portable but limited device. :)

Join the club. They'll start whining that you never spend any money and are all talk. Get used to it.
