Windows Live SkyDrive, now with 5 GB of free storage for PCs, Macs

Skydrive_storage_2

There's a few bits of good news from the Microsoft Windows Live SkyDrive team today. First up, the free online storage is increased five times over the old one-gigabyte offering, bringing you up to 5 GB. Additionally, the service is no longer limited to the U.S., U.K., and India: effective today, there are 35 more areas where you can have a SkyDrive. The file storage and sharing service also has some performance updates which should make the whole cloud-experience a little more sunny. You'll need a Windows or Macintosh computer with Firefox 1.5 or higher, or Internet Explorer 6 or higher in order to use the free service. If you're on the go with connectivity but need a place to park some protected data, you might want to give it a try.

does it map to a drive letter? can i sync to it?

You can't currently map a drive letter to SkyDrive nor can you sync to it. At this point, you can use it to store files for your own use or for shared use with contacts you specify. You can only access it through a web client.

Until you can map the skyDrive to a drive letter, it just doesn't seem workable as online storage (like sharepoint).

Even gMail can appear as a drive, hopefully microsoft can add this soon...
