SanDisk boosts Ultra II SD capacity to 8 GB, no card reader needed

My "don't go anywhere without it" bit of mobile tech gets a boost today. What is it? It's the best investment I've ever made because it works with every single mobile computing device I own (not to mention some non-computing devices): a SanDisk Ultra II SD card with USB interface. My current one has just a single Gigabyte of capacity, but SanDisk has increased the storage to 8 Gigabytes. The suggested price is $99 when they hit stores next month, but I'm hoping to find one for around $80 or less when they go on sale.

There's no doubt that you can purchase a faster SD card or one with a lower price per gig, but the Ultra II is extremely versatile due to its ability to fold in half. Do that, and you'll expose a USB interface, which I prefer over carrying a card reader. I routinely swap this card from my digital camera right into my MacBook Pro, Samsung Q1P or Asus Eee PC thanks to the USB compatibility. If I need to transfer a file to someone else's PC, I don't have to worry about them having a card reader or integrated slot either. I truly take this card everywhere with me.

Ahhh, but it is SDHD. Currently none of my devices support such capacities. I am glad you have a new enough camera to use the device. I understand that transfer to my PC can be made through the USB connection.

I swear by my 1GB flippy. Especially since Apple stubbornly refuses to add a card reader to the MacBooks... However, I just got my hands on Eye-Fi which could be my future.

I have a 2G flippy which I use with PortableApps. Fantastic. With 8G I could also install Ubuntu and have a great portable OS. Yeah, I could install Puppy Linux on a smaller SD (1G would be plenty) and I have done so, but Ubuntu is just a bit easier and robust.

Also have an Eye-Fi which I like a lot, too, for my digital camera. Some little improvements could be made, and probably will. But I do wish it had the speed of these Ultra II Sandisks. And a stronger Wifi radio.

Ideally: 8G flippy with Eye-Fi. I could partition it 4G for Ubuntu, 1G PortableApps, 3G for pictures nad have it all!

just wanted to echo the convenience of this product. I had a 2gb for a while (lost) but I just loved having a jump drive basically installed on my laptop. I never had to carry anything extra on my keychain or in my bag.
