Geek Session- jonesing for new stuff

Kevin and I are each jonesing for new geek stuff, and not the same thing.  What we would like may surprise you and you'll have to watch the chat to find out what we wish we had in our hands.  Neither one of us can have what we want for different reasons so you might say we are lamenting what we can't have.  Have a look and see if you might want what we wish we had.

Kevin,

Plwaese buy the Fujitsu P1620.You can sell your Samantha for about $1000.00 with the upgrades you have done. I would think it would fit your needs well. The better screen resoulution and the keyboard if you need it. It also has a PC Card slot for expandability for many devices, such as firewire for video camera. I think it could replace multiple devices that you carry with you. It has more horsepower to run vista and you could play high def videos on it. Most of all I think you should buy it so you can write about it and share with your viewers. Don't let that Vegas Money go to waste.

Thanks,

Joshua A. Hall

I'm also eyeing the P1620 but have a few concerns regarding price-to-performance. $2474 seems expensive for a 1.2GHz/2GB/100GB-4200rpm configuration (over $3k with three year warranty and screen damage protection). I'd prefer a 1.33GHz U7700 processor, 4GB max memory, and larger, faster HDD -- even if it meant a small increase in footprint. (For that matter, a slightly larger display with higher dot pitch would be nice.) I'll probably continue using my P1610 or look to competitive products until the P1620's replacement is available.

How about an EyeFi? Love to see that in action.

I would happily read a transcript of the chat, but alas, my hearing prevents me from getting anything from the chat itself. Please consider creating transcripts if you want to reach the widest possible audience.

Laptop Authority sells the P1620 for less and no tax, and I've heard only positive things from them. They sell this base model: http://www.laptopauthority.com/product/Tablet%20PCs/322
for $1700. So would it be possible to buy a $81 kingston 1gb micro dimm from their store and upgrade it yourself? Then that would be much cheaper than the same model they sell for $2k.

I still think the 1.8" drive will be the bottle neck, unless you go for the SSD version.

Zunq: Thanks for the link. I hear where you're coming from, but the P1610 is available with 1GB RAM and up to 80GB HDD. Without 2GB memory and 100GB HDD the P1620 is a $1700 processor upgrade. Seems better to wait until retailers drop the price a little further on the P1620, 2GB aftermarket RAM is available, and 48GB/64GB SSDs drop a few hundred dollars.

Having used (less so now) a P1610, I have to agree with James that Fujitsu really did do the right upgrades. I never found the processor to be that bad for my intended use. But I would also never have put Vista on the P1610. It was pointless to me. The memory is still an issue though because of the type. Micro SODIMMs are so unbelievably expensive. But at least the capacities are increasing. My guess is that it's still one slot. Ugghh.

I will say that I didn't find the hard drive to be so bad on the P1610. An SSD should be outstanding, but it wasn't horrible having to deal with the standard HDD.

As for Skyfire, I'm in 100% agreement with James. That browser looks sweet. I also fully expect that there will be a charge for it. Hopefully not absurd. We'll see. I consider the browser issue to be the single biggest problem on Windows Mobile devices. This looks to be a very large step forward.

Funny-the "want list" comes out a week before your birthday!
