Future Palm OS phones and Centro could get Google "My Location"

Google_maps_treoPalm OS devices were looking lost when Google added the My Location feature to Google Maps for Mobile late last month. It turns out that the API to identify cell towers exists in the Palm OS, but it hasn't been made public. As a result, the Google Maps application can't call to it and therefore, no "My Location" functionality.

Palm Infocenter has word from Palm that the company is going to make the private API available, so that could (and should) lead to the GPS-like functionality in the future. The change will require a ROM update so at this time, Palm indicates that only new Palm OS phones and the Centro will likely see usage of the API. Bear in mind, it's then up to Google to take advantage of it, although at that point, other mapping applications could use the cell tower IDs as well.

Just a thought, but would you consider adding the RSS icon to your home page? I had a hard time finding it on the front page. And eventually saw the rss link on the individual post page ("Enjoy this post? Receive more jkOnTheRun content for FREE by subscribing to the RSS feed!")

Maybe before all your podcast links? Anyway, thanks for the posts (especially about the Dell tablet).

darren unless ur using a really outdated or obscure browser the current version of the big 3 (firefox ie and safari) have a little link at the end of the adress bar to subscribe to the rss feed

Thought somebody might be interested. If you have a PC/UMPC, mobile Internet connection and bluetooth NMEA GPS, MeHere is a FREE application that will download a Google Map centred on your current GPS location. NOT a fully featured NAV system but useful if you're lost or trying to get orientated!
