Users reporting problems with Vista patches
The big news yesterday was the release by Microsoft of four patches to Vista that addressed a lot of issues that are affecting many Vista users. This was surprising news because a lot of the issues these patches address are reported to be issues that the beta SP1 fixes so it was a bit surprising to find these rolled out into fixes for the general public. A lot of people downloaded and installed these patches and there are comments here and on other web sites that indicate these patches may be causing problems. We're talking little problems like BSODs and other stability issues directly related to the patches. These problems may not be widespread but until I can be sure I do not intend to install them on my new HP 2710p as it's running fine and I don't want to rock the boat. We will keep an eye on the situation and report here further information as we have it.

I installed three of the four patches yesterday (I skipped the Media Center patch since I don't use it) on my Kohjinsha SH6 and haven't experienced any problems at all. I also really haven't noticed any improvements in the SH6's performance, either.

I also installed 3 of the patches and left the MC one. I think that people get easily to scare from a BSOD. I got the BSOD while rebooting after the installation. I rebooted it and everything went ok the second time. As many other reported I could not see anything that proved MS claims that these patches will the PC to come faster from Standby either hibernation. I also could not find any evidence that the battery life is better now after these patches. So like I said before at this moment the SP1 is something that does not fix anything that we would like to see fixed or improved.

I installed 3 of the updates on my R2Hv and saw a improvement in the TIP right away. Before when resuming from sleep I would have to wait for the TIP to disappear and come back before I could use it, now it just works! We'll see over time if it remains that way.New to check battery life.
I couldn't get the 3rd link to locate the update.

I also installed only 3 of the updates as it seems Msft pulled one of the Updates. The 3rd link was consistantly reporting that the link I was attempting to download was no longer available. I installed only on my DELL Optiplex GS 520 Desktop running VISTA Home Premium. So far no issues at all, no BSOD. Obviously I will not be seeing any improved battery life.

I installed all 4 patches and haven't had any crashes but can't say I've seen too many improvements in terms of sleep or battery life. Media Center seems much snappier on my HTPC though.

I installed all 4 patches (the link that was "missing" was just the KB description -- the patch itself was available at a different link). I've shut down twice since the install and haven't gotten the usual shutdown BSOD either time. I realize a sample size of n=2 isn't significant, but it's a start. I also haven't tried to sleep, yet, either (I was getting a BSOD about every other time I came out of sleep), so I don't know if that issue has been resolved.
One other problem I was having is still there. It won't recognize my Dlink 4-port USB hub. It's just a basic hub. My other PCs have no problem with it, but Vista throws up a warning about the USB device failing to install. Has anyone come across that issue?

I installed the first patch - related to coming out of sleep - since I have a bad case of black screen flickering after sleep/hibernate on my 2710p. This patch made it much worse - every second time, it wouldn't come back on at all: black screen, full HDD activity, requiring a reboot. Uninstalled it this morning.

OK, nevermind what I said before. After two more shutdowns with no BSOD (5 total), I got one this morning. I did two things differently this time than the last 5 times: I hooked a monitor to my laptop and I hooked up a USB drive (not just the problematic hub, but a separate USB drive, too).
I use Ultramon (the beta version for Vista) with an external monitor on my laptop -- I can't work with only one monitor anymore. Maybe this setup is causing a problem.
Yesterday, I hooked up the problematic USB hub and got the "failed to install" error. I unplugged it and shutdown with out getting a BSOD. Today, I plugged in the hub again and this time Vista recognized it but gave me an error saying it would run faster if plugged in to a high-speed USB port. All of my laptop ports are high-speed, so this error doesn't make sense. Anyway, I had to reboot for another reason and it shut down okay with the hub plugged in. However, when it rebooted, the laptop no longer recognized the hub. So, I unplugged the hub and plugged in an external drive. When I shut down after that, I got a BSOD.
So, perhaps it is related to one or both of these changes (USB drive plugged in, and external monitor attached and using Ultramon). Who knows?
At any rate, my old problem is back (or still here), but I haven't noticed any new problems.
