Celebrity Gadget Bag: what does Chris Pirillo carry?
Regular readers seem very interested in what James and I carry in our gear bags, so last month, we created permanent pages for our current listings. The links are easily accessible in the sidebar of every page so you can easily click to see what James and I are currently carrying and why. The whole exercise got me thinking: it's not often that we get to hear what celebrities and web personalities are carrying around, is it? Hence, the beginning of a Celebrity Gadget Bag series starting with Mr. Lockergnome himself: Chris Pirillo!
Chris told me up front that he's a minimalist and boy he wasn't kidding! In fact, his first response to my "what do you carry?" question was: a MacBook Pro and an iPhone. I knew better to believe that this was all he carries, so a little gentle prodding yielded a wee bit more. Occasionally Chris carries a Canon Powershot TX1 due to the video quality; makes sense for someone who's constantly on the web and has hundreds of YouTube videos created. Not so happy with the still picture quality of his TX1, Chris keeps a Canon SD700 IS in the glovebox for pics.
Chris hasn't yet found a gadget bag to his liking, so he carries the MacBook Pro in... you'll want to sit down for this... a Windows Vista shoulder bag. I'm not sure who should be more upset: the Windows camp or the Mac fandom. ;) Secretly, I think Chris is making a "why can't we all get along statement with a Mac in the Vista bag...
I asked about connectivity since you can't be a web personality on the go with the... uh... web. Chris is big user of WiFi (not a pusher, just a user mind you) but has a loaner Sierra Wireless AirCard 595U USB EV-DO modem on the Sprint network, courtesy of Ustream.tv. Chris mentions poor Mac support for this particular card, and several others have had issues as well. It's tough to pass up a loaner 3G modem, but one of the newer AirCards might be a better option.
Oh and that iPhone gets protected as well; while I decided not to hide my phone (and opted for the InvisibleSHIELD), Chris uses a thin, black case with a screen protector. Come to think of it, Chris is pretty minimal. I suggested he's part of the ultra-light crowd like the backpackers that trim handles off of toothbrushes to save weight and Chris quickly responded with a comical "we prefer to be called Urban Minimalists, thankyouverymuch." :)
Thanks to Chris for sharing in our first Celebrity Gadget Bag post; if you haven't yet see his annual Christmas song parody, it's now live and will likely settle the MacBook Pro / Vista shoulder bag issue. You'll understand when you see it...

We need to coin a new term for such long-tail celebrities. Nicheking? Weblebrity? At least Perillo wasn't described as being "famous".
