Use ExpressCard modem in a PC Card slot
Novatel makes an adapter that lets you use ExpressCard devices in older PC Card slots. The XCA-3 is not a new product but since I recently switched to an ExpressCard EV-DO modem I haven't been able to use EV-DO on the Fujitsu P1610. Today I ordered the Novatel adapter and when I get a chance to try it I'll let you know how well it works. I switched from the PC Card Verizon modem to an ExpressCard format since it can be used in both the HP 2710p and the MacBook Pro, and it works well in both. This adapter will let me use it in any PC with a slot so I'll be good no matter what device crosses Mobile Tech Manor. The adapter can be left in the PC Card slot of the PC all the time, even without the ExpressCard, effectively turning it into an ExpressCard slot. And I do so love my EV-DO. I am very impressed with the Verizon v740 ExpressCard modem too.

I'm very interested in the USB 2.0 adapter. It could be useful with UMPCs.

I'm going to wait until I decide which my new device will be before going with WWAN. It may not be a UMPC now since I want to at least view 720P h.264 footage from my new cheapass hybrid cam.
11" or lower devices may what I end up with. Sony TZ series looks very nice since it has Sprint EVDO Rev A built in to all the units. It's simply beautiful too but it's not a tablet PC and it's expensive.
If I get a device with an ExpressCard slot and no internal WWAN, I'll go with an ExpressCard solution since it gives the options of plugging it into a PC Card slot or USB via adapters.

Hi James: I've been using the XCA-3 adaptor on my P1610 for a couple of months. it protrudes a bit on the PC card slot, but you may still find it OK to leave it inside the slot. You are right, it is great that you can switch the Express Card (mine is Sprint) between machines and saty fully communicated. This adaptor helps a lot, and its a very cheap solution. Enjoy...
