The trigger has been pulled on a HP 2710p
I have been evaluating the HP 2710p for a few weeks as you know and it's been a surprisingly pleasant experience. The 2710p comes very close to duplicating the experience of the venerable tc1100, something I thought impossible for a convertible Tablet PC to do. It does that due to its thin form and clean design. It is also surprisingly snappy even though it's only got a 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo under the hood. Of course the 2 GB of memory helps Vista along and the tightly integrated utilities and drivers that HP has put together no doubt helps in that regard too.
How impressed am I with the 2710p experience? I just ordered one to use every day in my mobile lifestyle. I can't remember when I've used a mobile PC for a few weeks and not found a single thing that frustrates me. Usually the concessions that must be made to keep a device thin and light as possible end up causing me some grief at times but not so with the 2710p. I ordered one configured exactly like the evaluation unit that HP sent me:
- 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo
- 2 GB of RAM
- 100 GB 4,200 rpm hard drive
- 6-cell battery
- 12.1-inch WXGA screen (1280x800)
- 2 MP web cam
- Intel graphics
- Bluetooth
- WiFi a/b/g
- 3 year warranty
The HP store couldn't verify when this will ship so hopefully it will get here before the evaluation unit goes back. I don't like thinking about the possibility of being without a 2710p, it's become that important in my work.

I look forward to your first "A typical day with my 2710p" post...
...and your first OQO review post.

That seals it then, the HP 2710P it is...
Now the only problem is getting hold of a decent model over here in the UK because currently we only have two different models. A 1.2 Core 2 Duo and a 1.2 Core Duo. Both with only a 1GB of RAM, both without a webcam, both with 80GB HDD's.
Any chance of posting me one if I pay you up front?

Apologies, one has a 1.2Ghz Core 2 Duo and the other is a 1.2Ghz single core variant.

Sorry Guy, I can't do that. If I did that for everyone who asked I'd be running an import/export business. Don't get a 1GB model though, Vista absolutely requires 2 GB in my opinion.

Not only that I think HP would have something to say about the warranty should I ever need to claim on it. Glad your pleased with it, as Scott says, can't wait for the first 'day in the life'
Now... where did I put HP UK's number, I feel like another moan!!

Was the 64 GB SSD option not enough storage capacity? I might have considered that since it should be available next month, but my storage needs are meager compared to yours.

Does the fingerprint scanner have the ability to function as a scroll control? I think I've seen mention of some fingerprint scanners that can do this, and that would do a little something to make up for the lack of a jog dial.

Charles, no it doesn't. Where it's placed it wouldn't make a very good trackpad.

Have you evaluated the Fujitsu T2010. It is a similar size. The guys at GottaBeMobile have a good video review. I heard you have the express/32 Modem. It is a neat solution because you can use the pc card to express/ 32 adapter.

Did you order this with Vista?

Given your recent strongly worded post about the failings of Vista, I am curious why you would not have chosen XP Tablet edition. I am considering this package myself.

I went with Vista Business because it runs well on the evaluation unit I have. Remember this is a Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of memory and it handles Vista very well.

Joshua, I have not evaluated the T2010 so I can't compare it to the HP. I ordered the HP because quite frankly it's the best Tablet PC I have ever used because it fits my work style perfectly.

Yes, I intend to get a ExpressCard to PC Card adapter so I can use the EV-DO modem in all of my devices with PC Card slots.

Are you replacing the 1610 with this unit?
Posted by: lsbeller | September 13, 2007 at 07:32 PM
I don't intend to at this time. The 1610 is still the best knock around Tablet around, that small form is just so nice in the hands. :)
