Poor man's pedometer: trace routes with Gmaps Pedometer

Gmapspedometer

It's near time for my 20th high school reunion and I miss being the competitive runner that I was back then. I've gone from being a two-minute 800m man to a two-hour beer, chips and salsa fan. I still weigh what I did twenty years ago so while time hasn't affected my weight, it hasn't helped my running so I'm buckling down to get my game back. Instead of fancy devices to help, I've decided to keep things simple so I bought an inexpensive Timex 50-lap watch and found a great service that uses Google maps called Gmaps Pedometer.

You simply trace your running route on a standard Google Map and the Gmaps pedometer tracks the distance and automatically places mile markers if you want. You can save your route for a custom URL and even view the elevation of your run like I did above on a 4.5 miler I did yesterday. There's a few nice features like a calories burned calculation as well. Gmaps Pedometer is drop dead simple to use and provides a nice way to track the distance of your latest run, bike ride or walk. Then again, this is probably why I like to run on a track: you just need to be able to count to figure out your distance. ;)

I don't know about all the running, but the link pointed to a google maps to gpx link. Now that's pretty useful for making your own custom maps.
