Vista Performance and Reliability Pack coming next week?

I've only just read this on the Neowin site, so I have no other evidence as to the validity, but if true, this is good news for Vista owners. In the upcoming Tuesday patch event, Neowin says we'll see a Vista Performance and Reliability Pack. The fixes revolve around many performance issues we've witnessed firsthand with our mobile devices, so this might speed things up a bit. Apparently all of the issues came from Vista users using the Error Reporting service, so Microsoft does indeed use that data for good use. After the jump is a full listing of the expected fixes in the Pack, but here are the ones that hit me from a mobile device standpoint:

    * Improves performance in bringing up Login Screen after resuming from Hibernate.
    * Resolves an issue where synchronization of offline files to a server can get corrupted.
    * Resolves an issue where a computer can lose its default Gateway address when resuming from sleep mode.
    * Improves the performance when copying or moving entire directories containing large amounts of data or files.
    * Improves the performance of Vista’s Memory Manager in specific customer scenarios and prevents some issues which may lead to memory corruption.

    * Improves performance in resuming back to the desktop from the Photo and Windows Energy screensaver.
    * Resolves an issue where some secured web pages using advanced security technologies may not get displayed in Internet Explorer on Windows Vista.
    * Resolves an issue where a shared printer may not get installed if the printer is connected to a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 system and User Access Control is disabled on the Vista client.
    * Resolves an issue where creating AVI files on Vista may get corrupted.
    * Improves the performance in calculating the ‘estimated time remaining’ when copying/moving large files.
    * Improves performance in bringing up Login Screen after resuming from Hibernate.
    * Resolves an issue where synchronization of offline files to a server can get corrupted.
    * Resolves a compatibility issue with RAW images created by Canon EOS 1D/1DS Digital SLR Camera which can lead to data loss. This only affects RAW images created by these two specific camera models.
    * Resolves an issue where a computer can lose its default Gateway address when resuming from sleep mode.
    * Improves the performance when copying or moving entire directories containing large amounts of data or files.
    * Improves the performance of Vista’s Memory Manager in specific customer scenarios and prevents some issues which may lead to memory corruption.

Is it just me or does anyone else find it sad that any OS has to have a "reliability and performance" pack? I mean, isn't this what the OS is supposed to do inherently?

Very timely, I was just reading on Microsofts shenanigans in regards to SP1. They seem to have disavowed it until recently, hoping business would migrate to it instead of waiting for SP1. Now I am reading SP1 *might* be available in Feb of 2008 when the new server edition comes out. That just seems like a ridiculously long time to wait for SP1, especially with all the problems Vista has had, it's long long delay to release, and the recent spotlight on Apple/Intel and Linux.

It seems more and more that MS is just too large of a corporation to manage itself effectively. Just the fact that they are already talking up the successor to Vista, but have not even hinted at providing any solutions to Vista users smacks of utter highway robbery. In the meantime I will continue to use Windows XP until we get past Windows Vista ME as it is beginning to be called by many.
