Non-iPhone post: DataViz's RoadSync for Exchange on Nokia N80

Everyone's probably heard about the iPhone (and the potential for Exchange syncing through IMAP) enough today, so here's a quick video to introduce to an Exchange syncing solution for other phones: DataViz's RoadSync for Exchange. It does cost $49.95, but provides Direct Push support with Exchange on tons of platforms and devices: Symbian, Palm, Java, etc... This application brings the same e-mail functionality I enjoy on my Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices while allowing me to try and use non-Microsoft-based devices. DatzViz does offer a 30-day free trial to see if it meets your needs.

I do show you the one minor downside of RoadSync in this video that gives you something else to think about besides all the Apple coverage today. Almost.

I got a N95 with RoadSync - and my 2 cents are

1. RoadSync does not take all fields from Exchange - most important missing is picture and CAR phone number. :-(

2. I have not been able to get certificates to work (importing my exchange certificate - so roadsync dont ask every time...)

I'ev noticed a couple of major (for me) issues with RoadSync.
a) there is no indication of new emails arriving other than the sound. No popup, no icon, no summary, nothing! Even Nokia's free product gives you a popup indicator.
b) the font sizes are all too large. The advert for the latest version mentions 3 font sizes, but the smallest (labelled 'small') is the same as standard Nokia emails you you only get to see 9 short lines on-screen.
c) there is no summary of your inbox on the front screen. Not sure if this is a Nokia issue, but this feature is essential for push-email to be usable, as demonstrated by every Blackberry and PocketPC device.

I've contacted DataViz about this so it will be interesting to hear their response.

OK, as a follow up, here is DataViz's response:

1) You can turn vibrate alert on in the profile settings on the device

Ah, of course. Vibrate replaces the need for any visual indication of email arriving in a *push email system*. D'oh!

2) You may have the device font set to large, which will affect the font sizes in RoadSync

Nope. The DataViz configuration screens have a nice small font, so why can't I have the same one when reading emails?

3) By design of the device, there is no way to show email on the main screen of N series devices

OK, thanks Nokia :/ Perhaps we'll get this on the next release of firmware.

I've requested a refund on RoadSync as the free Nokia solution offers (in my opinion) has the only usable features and it's $49.95 less (it's free).

Good follow up Jason, but one question: isn't the free Mail for Exchange application from Nokia only available for certain Nokia devices? Free is definitely good but it might not be an option for all device owners.
