Samsung Q1U fondled, UMPC Police looking for Mike Cane

Q1ultra_press4 In colorful vernacular that we've come to expect, Mike Cane shares a PG-13 experience fondling the Samsung Q1 Ultra....mainly written from the Apple store, of course. ;) It's always interesting to see hands-on first impressions of a device and Mike certainly delivers. In this day and age, I have to wonder why he's not streaming these things from ustream.tv; maybe we can take up a collection and bribe him for next time.

Mike certainly loved the bright 1024 x 600 screen, but the device falls short on several of his other personal expectations, most notably: performance. It's way too early to tell how the device will run in real-world situations plus everyone has different computing needs, but if you want someone's first impressions while using the Q1U, here's your chance.

Are you kidding? Mike blogs from some Palm PDA device, no HD video from Mike. :)

I don't blog from a Palm! I use the desktop PC mostly. I've given up trying to do it from the 770! (Although when my LifeDrive is alive, I'll try it out with that -- but I don't expect it to work!)

Anyway, I've just updated the post with my morning-after text. I figured I'd keep everything in one post rather than do a new one and expect people to look for it.

Mike, you can turn off the "ghost mouse" in Vista. First thing I did as it's totally useless IMHO.

You can also resize a floating TIP by holding and dragging the bottom right corner. Neither the 'ghosty mouse' or the TIP size should be negatives for the Q1U since they're configurable. I do hear you on the vectoring and the inclusion of some palm rejection technology, but of course, that drives up the price as well. It's all about compromises....

Mike, although you had really good information about the Q1U, you seemed to swear a lot and you gave me the impression that you are un-professional.

I appreciate the review though, as I am looking at buying a UMPC soon.

Seems to me that I was right when I was warning people about the performance of these devices.

I have to say the same: swearing is not cool. It's unprofessional.

Mikes experience sounds like the classic case of someone who is not familiar with the hardware or software, using a default config machine for a short amount of time. i could easily combat every point he made based on my previous experiences using new machines at a store versus getting them home & getting a true "feel" for them.

so personally i dont put much value into these types of hands-on impressions.

Who cares about being professional? What the common tech surfer wants is answer to his worse fears and biggest pleasures. I've found quite a good amount of both in Mike's review and I must say I liked it, even the swearing!
Think different :D

I was fine with Mike's review, appreciate the time he took to do it.
I guess it confirmed what I originally thought - steer well clear (mainly due to the gimmicky keyboard)
In my opinion the best spec'd UMPCs at the moment are the OQO 02, and the to be launched HTC Shift and Fujitsu UMPC they showed at the Intel event. Hopefully the Shift and the Fujitsu UMPC won't suffer performance issues

I'm thinking on a machine with a slow harddrive, a slowish CPU and 1GB of RAM, one would want to seriously prune the amount of services running to keep things snappy. Since I'm not a Vista user myself I haven't really messed with it, but just killing as many needless things as possible would probably improve things a lot.

Maybe a bit off topic but since one comment mentioned....Any idea when we should expect to see the Shift or Fujitsu UMPC??

The Shift is due later this year, we've been promised advance notice and one of the first review units out. I haven't heard anything on the Fujitsu.

Arrgghhh! The lack of palm rejection technology kills me! I just sold my Fujitsu p1510d and switched to a Samsung Q1P and I am ready to pull my hair out. Yes, the p1510d also had plam rejection - just not as tweaked as the 1610. I was hoping to get the Q1U when it came out hoping that they had added it...This may be a deal killer for me. I may end up with the 1610 or Flybook V5 instead.

Steve

Steve, the P1610 would be absolutely perfect for the way you work.

>>>Mike, although you had really good information about the Q1U, you seemed to swear a lot and you gave me the impression that you are un-professional.

I'm not running a tech site nor is it a resume for employment elsewhere. I use the language I like. Don't read it any more.

Duhhhh. That's why it's called a FONDLE and not a REVIEW. I don't do fekkin reviews.

I actually considered not reading it any more and closed the window many times but then re-opened the "fondle" and continued reading. I couldn't stop reading the text as the text was typed in an Apple store and I love Apple. Next time I read your "Fondle" I will make sure my parental control is set to replace your foul, unprofessional, offensive, ignorant, and un-"apple"-like language.

I appreciate the fekkin review as I am looking to buy an UMPC sooon. :)

>>>your foul, unprofessional, offensive, ignorant, and un-"apple"-like language.

Ooh, the link I posted is just made for weenies like you. Go read.

I'll be posting an update in a *new* blog post. I fondled it a second time and have more comments. Those who whiiiined the first time around are NOT invited.

Well I have to say I enjoyed this fondle very much. I have to wounder though, if the Q1 ultra in the store doesn't have a problem with it. Seems that such a slow responsivness would not be tolerated to be passed by samsung as one of the newest Next Generation UMPC.

I appreciate the fondle, as I am now looking at buy a Tablet PC soon.
