Microsoft releases hotfix for SD card usage in Vista

Mauricio Freitas of Geekzone has pointed out that Microsoft has quietly released a hotfix for Windows Vista for those having problems using SD cards.  The hotfix addresses a range of problems:

The following issues are fixed in this hotfix package. These issues have not been previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

• When you try to remove an SD card driver or when you try to disable it, a Windows Vista-based computer stops responding. When this problem occurs, you receive a Stop error message that resembles the following: Stop 0x000000C4 (0x00000062,parameter2,parameter3,parameter4)

• When you insert an SD card into a card reader on a Windows Vista-based computer, Windows Vista does not detect the SD card. This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:

The SD card does not support 1.8 volts. Typically, most SD cards use 3.3 volts.
The SD host controller uses 1.8 volts.

• When you insert an SD card into the card reader on a Toshiba M500 portable computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Vista does not detect the SD card. This issue occurs because of a timing issue with the SD host controller.

• When you copy more than 4 gigabytes (GB) of files to a Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) card, some files are corrupted. You do not experience this issue if you copy less than 4 GB of files to the SDHC card. This problem occurs because the Windows Vista SD driver does not correctly process more than 4 GB of addressing.

• An SD card stops responding after a Windows Vista-based computer resumes from sleep (S3) or from hibernation (S4) two times. For example, you experience this issue after you follow these steps:

1. You put the computer to sleep or into hibernation.
2. You start the computer from sleep or from hibernation.
3. You copy files to the SD card or from the SD card.
4. You put the computer to sleep or into hibernation
5. You start the computer from sleep or from hibernation.

• You try to use the Safely Remove Hardware feature to remove an SD card from a Windows Vista-based computer while the card is being used. As expected, the card is not removed from the computer because the card is being used. However, when you try to access the SD card, you receive the following error message: SD media cannot be accessed. Media is not accessible, access denied

• On a Toshiba M500 portable computer that is running Windows Vista, you use Device Manager to disable the "Bluetooth RFBUS from Toshiba" driver. However, when you re-enable the driver, Device Manager stops responding.

If you're having any of these problems using SD cards under Vista you should definitely have a look at this hotfix.

I am having several SD related issues that appear to be addressed by this hotfix. Is there any way to get a copy of it short of spending an hour on the phone?

The Motion LS800 SD card reader had not been working in Vista:
http://www.motioncomputing.com/kb/article.aspx?id=10132&cNode=3A4G6R

Is this a fix for such problems, or do Motion users need to wait for other drivers?

(the Motion Knowledge Base articles have been on the blink today; you may need to refresh the URL above to see the page).

The only SD-related issue I've had with Vista to date is that I'll be using the card and eject it properly and Vista acknowledges the ejection, but the next time I insert the card (not having used it in the meantime), Vista complains that the card may be damaged and asks to run a chkdsk on it. I haven't had any problems yet, but it's still quirky.

Thank you for the information! I downloaded the hotfix but unfortunately it has not resolved my issue. My SD card is still not being detected. When I insert it into the embedded card reader, I do hear Windows detect that it's there, I get a prompt to install drivers for the card and there's a conflict in device manager. I've tried rebooting, the hotfix, updating drivers & uninstalling drivers from within Device Manager and reinstalling the card reader's drivers from the HP website. Nothing has helped. Any suggestions....anyone? I have an HP Pavilion 9235nr, running Windows Vista Premium 32 bit. Thank you.

I have an ASUSU2E, whherein i was reading from my sd card slot, I believe a Ricoh driver, whenthe driver and card slot stopped responding.
There is no driver from Microsoft, or ASUS, to solve the issue, now, in device manager, the Drive does not exist. It is not there at all.

I have searched the Microsoft knowledge base, and the ASUS Site for a dirver for this and there is no hot-fix, and there is little chance of recessitating the Drive, as there is no drive in Device manager, or in "Computer"

I was trying to upload some JPEGS from the card with A Microsoft Import Utility when this occurred. Stranger still, this occurred in My Fujitsu T2010 and So this was my second Vista Ultimate PC who has lost it's SD Card Slot.

Wish I knew why
