Seagate's Digital Audio Video Experience
I'm on the fence with the new D.A.V.E. device that Seagate announced on a recent PodTech video. I want to like the device, which is a small portable hard-drive with integrated wireless capability. You'll see it in May for under $200 in both a 10 GB and 20 GB capacity. The concept as I understood it is that you can pair this up with a Bluetooth phone to provide extra storage for the phone or to access your digital content on your phone from the drive. I'm sure there will be other uses for it as well; some folks are already commenting about an iPhone add-on.
I'm going to sit in "wait and see" mode for the time being as I'm curious how Seagate will work with partners and developers (as Scoble points out, "there's a software API") to see how the device evolves. At the moment, we've got a small hard drive with a USB connection that adds Bluetooth and WiFi capabilities; could be interesting, but I'm waiting to see what practical applications we see from this. I've been looking for something that this could end up being for a few years. I do a lot of presentations to medium sized groups and what would really like is a way to walk into a room, hookup my PC, start projecting and drop this on the table telling everyone with a laptop to logon and gab a copy of my presentation. No more "pass the memory stick" or collecting cards to email out later. If someone would develop an app using the API to do that easily, I would buy one in a minute.

Yes! There was talk of the Personal Area Network (PAN) in the early days of bluetooth, but I have yet to see an array of devices that could support that concept. The DAVE is right on, at least for me. Now if the Zune folks could built a similar functionality beyond squirting music, that would be even better.

this device definitely has both the cool and functionality factors working for it. mobile storage that works wirelessly has almost endless possible uses. if they want people storing videos i think they should have a 40gig option, but i bet there are plans for future models with a higher capacity.
