Ilium InScribe now available for FREE!

Hopefully, you remember how excited we were when Ilium announced a beta version of InScribe. This data entry application showed great promise for UMPCs and Tablet PCs alike and now Ilium has released the final version of InScribe! I was already impressed with the beta version and yet the final version appears much more refined and usable.

You don't need to learn a new keyboard layout for InScribe; you simply tap or drag across the keys you wish to use. The app is smart enough to know that you want to use a character when you change direction and slide to another character. If you're dragging on the keyboard and lift your finger or stylus, InScribe knows that's the end of the word and adds a space. It's that simple and effective!

The advanced features really set this program apart as well:

  • You can customize a keyboard layout; add a key or remove a row if you need to.
  • Transparency of the application is user controlled.
  • Need access to the app behind InScribe? Hit the "Ghost" button for transparency of InScribe and full access to the apps behind it! (This is like scary-cool and addresses one of the major DialKeys complaints!)
  • Tray minimization and app resizing which is great for the "small screen".

Here's the best part: did you notice that we categorized this post as a "Freeware of the Moment"? That's because Ilium is making this program free to everyone at this time! That's right: this application is completely free making it a win-win situation and a no-cost productivity booster! This app just got moved to my "must have" list for Sammy. Thanks Ilium Software!

They took a good program and not only made it better but made it FREE! We love free on jkOTR. :)

We should also point out that InScribe is a winner of the Handango/ Microsoft UMPC contest for best program in class. Congratulations to Ilium!

I am entering this text using Ilium Software’s Inscribe program for text entry. It takes some getting used to because you enter text by drawing the words on the keyboard. I get lost sometimes and have to enter a word over and over. The delete key is actually a delete word key, so I sometimes erase perfectly good words by mistake. Maybe I will get faster with practice and not make so many mistakes. I am tired now. I think I need a nap.

Bill, don't think, do. Take a nap, that is. :)

Bill, after you take your nap, try the Backspace key; it won't delete the previous word. ;)

The program is a must if you are using a umpc. One of the major criticisms of the umpc is the lack of a keyboard. Well... with the right settings (aking the keyboard fill the entire screen)and the ability to use the "ghost" function to access what is behind it the entire SCREEN of the umpc becomes the keyboard that can be used with your fingertips. It takes a little while to get used to it but after the initial learning curve it is just amazing how quickly you can type on it.
I made a new keyboard profile based on my favorite "third party keyboard arrangement" and inscribe now replaced that and the tip.
One other note-- now the fact that the TIP doesn't automatically appear unless you use additional software is a plus. otherwie the TIP keeps appearing as you type away.

Has anyone had a problem with this software? I installed it on my Samsung Q1 and most of the keys do not type anything and the number keys type letters. For example, when I press the "1" it types the letter "n". This is very wierd. I am going to try and reinstall it and see if that fixes it.

We've heard it's a conflict with ActiveWords and both companies are working to fix it.

Thank you for the hint on ActiveWords. That is exactly what is causing the conflict.I sure hope that they find a solution.
