Pocket PC helps give "sight" to the blind

Students participating in the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition developed a solution that helps provide environmental awareness for the visually impaired. As if that isn't impressive enough, the solution uses a Windows Mobile handheld device to provide audio information to the blind.

"We used ultrasonic sensors to map the place around the visually impaired person, and then provide a real-time 3D sound feedback of the environment, using a PocketPC running on Windows Mobile 5.0. The solution also extends to other platforms running on .NET Framework, and leverages accessibility of computers to the blind, using frequency grids and speech support."

What a great project and example of using mobile technology to improve quality of life! Here I thought Bubble Breaker was life-changing....rock on Microsoft Imagine Cup participants!

hey,

Thanks for appreciating the idea. The sad thing is that none of has been able to pursue the project to final use, stuck in course work and job issues.

I'm still hiding from the people at the Blind School. Hoping to be able to work for them soon.

Thanks anyways
