Marvell buys Intel's declining mobile chip unit

Intel_logoHas the Intel XScale processor seen better days in the past? Intel must think so as they sold their communications and application processor division to Marvell for $600 million. It's no secret that while Intel pushed heavy into mobile chip processors in the last 10 years, they're facing stiff competition with AMD who might be grabbing a part of the UMPC chip market. Add the fact that consumers want faster, cheaper and more powerful full-fledged Intel CPUs and you've got a recipe for a sale.

Some of the better known chips that will now come from Marvell include:

  • PXA9xx used in Blackberry devices
  • PXA27x used in Windows Mobile devices

I've been trying think why you would want to put a microchip into a comic and I can't think of anything.

Actually, I think Robin Williams has one implanted. Oh wait...you meant a comic BOOK. My bad. ;)

Does this mean that instead of X-scale processors we will now get X-men-scale processors?

I await the increased chip abilities with interest.

Cheers Phil
