jkOnTheRun Audio Edition #19 - Usage scenarios for the Samsung Q1 UMPC

OK, we won't win any Academy Awards for this video. I'm still limited to a 1.3 MP webcam and if you've ever tried to capture an LCD image from a webcam, well, let's just say it isn't pretty. However, if there are any DV recorder manufacturers looking for a fair and honest review, maybe we should talk! ;)

What I tried to do was go through some of the many great scenarios you provided us and then let the Q1 try and handle them. Keep that in mind as you're watching the often dark video; the point here isn't to show the screen in crystal-clear imagery, but to see if the Q1 can handle the everyday work that you asked about. Remember: we're looking at the device as both concept and for hands-on usage. Having said that, here's some of the items you'll see in no particular order:

• Booting up into AVStation Now for media playback.
• Booting into Windows XP to show the time-frame of a boot up.
• Putting the device into Sleep mode and restoring it back to show the speed.
• Inking in OneNote 2007, Outlook 2007 and Windows Journal.
• Handwriting recognition in Windows Journal.
• A quick stop into MindJet's MindManager (Note: I had an issue in the video, but it wasn't the fault of the software or of the Q1. Second Note: notice that I said it was my fault without actually saying it was my fault?!?)
• Brief look at DialKeys and the Microsoft TouchPack.
• Surfing in IE7 via the LAN.
• Pulling the LAN cable out and surfing the web by using an XV6700 EV-DO Windows Mobile phone via a Bluetooth connection.
• An overview of the Samsung screen rotation

We'll likely have some additional videos of other scenarios for the Q1, but 34 minutes of a webcam video is probably more than you can bear for now!

Very nice video Kevin. I still haven't figured out why there's video on the JK on the run audio edition but what do I know. What was really fun, was that the Q1 in the video, full screen on a 19" monitorm was actually BIGGER than the Q1 I have sitting in front of the screen. Have you taken your Q1 for a walk yet?

Will, I won't make that decision until I get closer to the end of the 14-day return window. I really want to use the unit in my everday work scenarios for a few days before I decide to keep either the Q1 or my current tablet: a Toshiba M205.
Mark, thanks! You'll have to ask James why we do video in the audio edition! ;) Actually, James started the audio edition as podcasting was really taking off and video wasn't as prevelant. We're working on a cable TV channel and some big screen movies next. (NOT!) I'm taking the Q1 everywhere I go and getting some amazing reactions from people. However, most of the folks I show it to are techy kind of folks, so I want to get some reactions from non-techs too. Oh, and feel free to watch videos of the Q1 in fullscreen; however, I don't recommend watching any videos of me in that mode; you might crack the LCD.

Hello, I enjoyed your video walkthrough. That is a very cool device. I was wondering is there a way to turn off the touch screen and keep the digital ink thing going?

Glad you enjoyed the video Jimw! You can turn off the touchscreen as I did so when shutting down some of the hardware devices for my power testing. However, once you do that, you lose the ability to ink. Interestingly enough: when you connect the Q1 to an external monitor and output the video solely to that monitor, the Q1 monitor goes dark as expected. However, the touchscreen still works, so when you write on the dark Q1 screen, the output appears on the external monitor. I wouldn't recommend using it this way as it's difficult to tap the correct spots on a monitor with no pic! ;)
