High bandwidth = no pics

You have probably figured out that the site traffic has gone through the roof since getting Slashdotted yesterday.  This has resulted in pages intermittently failing to display some of the pics in the articles.  At least, I'm pretty sure this is the cause and I hope it will pass soon.  Here's what I'm talking about and why TypePad is likely not very happy with me right now:

  • Your bandwidth allotment:                    5 GB
  • Actual bandwidth usage this month:     52.5988 GB  (1051.98%)
  • Projected bandwith usage this month:  60.3912 GB  (1207.82%)

It appears that TypePad is not allowing me to post new pics in the articles, at least they won't even display in the editor.  I have not heard from TypePad at all about this so I don't know for sure they are the cause.  If so then I guess it's time to move the blog to another server.  Bummer.

Our TypePad team is usually pretty flexible with bandwidth if you get a surprise Slashdotting, so you might want to try filing a help ticket, as I don't think they'd disable photo uploads without letting you know.

Anil, thanks for jumping in. I have already heard from the TypePad team, just minutes after posting the help ticket. They are seeing the pics display fine so I don't know what the problem is at this point. It's not just me though, several readers have contacted me that the pics have disappeared for them too. Perhaps my blog database is too big?

imageshack.ws allows free hosting of images. I use it for my blog. ImageShack allows each image 100 megabytes of transfer a hour. It hosts most types of images and flash animations up to a meg in size. Check it out!

Are they making you pay for the bandwidth? If so, I can offer you some space and my server for images...

I have 1TB transfer monthly, and I only use 500GB.

Dan, thanks for the kind offer but I am so happy with TypePad that I'm going to continue this way. Who knows though, some day in the future long after you've forgotten this you may hear from me. :)

jk,

You may want to host your pictures up at http://www.imageshack.us or one of the other picture hosters because the caching servers Typepad uses uses port 8900/TCP, a port that is blocked by many corporations.

I can no longer see many of your photos.

Glad to hear you're over 5Gb in monthly traffic. Wow!

It's been 15 - 20 GB for a few months now. The /.ing was the killer, though. I'll have a look at imageshack, thanks.
